GEO Recommendation: No Documented Bot-Specific Control Found

Grok is xAI's AI assistant with real-time Web Search and separate X Search capabilities. xAI documents that Web Search can search the internet, access and browse web pages, and extract relevant information for answers. In the official documentation reviewed by ELNIQ GEO, we did not find a dedicated publisher-facing crawler identity or User-Agent for identifying this web access in server logs or managing it specifically through robots.txt.

How Grok accesses the web

xAI documents Web Search as a server-side tool that enables Grok to search the internet in real time, browse web pages, and extract relevant information to answer queries with up-to-date content. Search results can also provide source URLs used by Grok.

Grok has a separate X Search tool for searching posts, users, and threads on X. These are documented retrieval capabilities, but in the official xAI documentation reviewed by ELNIQ GEO, we did not find a dedicated publisher-facing Grok crawler identity, User-Agent, published IP range, or bot verification method for ordinary web access.

What this means for your site

  • Grok can search the web in real time and access web pages when Web Search is used.
  • xAI also provides a separate X Search capability, so web retrieval and retrieval from X should not be treated as the same traffic source.
  • ELNIQ GEO did not find a documented Grok-specific User-Agent or robots.txt token for selectively controlling ordinary web retrieval.
  • Without a documented publisher-facing bot identity, server requests should not be attributed to Grok solely from assumed request characteristics.

Identification & monitoring

Based on the official xAI documentation reviewed by ELNIQ GEO, we did not find a dedicated publisher-facing User-Agent, bot identity, published IP range, or verification method for Grok's Web Search traffic.

ELNIQ GEO therefore does not list a Grok-specific User-Agent or robots.txt rule based on the official documentation currently reviewed. Referral traffic from Grok, citations in Grok answers, and server-side web retrieval should be treated as separate signals when monitoring AI visibility.
